Mahesh Sugathan

Senior Research Fellow

Mahesh Sugathan is a Senior Research Fellow with the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development in Geneva working on trade, climate change and sustainable energy issues with a focus on climate-technologies. He is also  an independent consultant on trade policy issues and in addition provides business facilitation services for private sector firms. Mr. Sugathan previously worked as 'Programme Coordinator' - Economics and Trade Policy Analysis at the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development in Geneva, Switzerland. At ICTSD, he has also worked on projects covering a broad range of issues, including trade and environment, agriculture, sustainable energy and climate change. He has also been a consultant at the World Bank’s South Asia Regional Office in India on issues of renewable energy and energy efficiency investment policy frameworks. He has also consulted for various other international organisations including the International Trade Centre (ITC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the ACP Secretariat. 

Mr. Sugathan has a Masters degree in International Law and Economics from the World Trade Institute in Bern. In addition, Mr. Sugathan completed undergraduate and graduate studies in Economics and International Relations at the University of Kerala and the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. He has also pursued summer-school courses in environmental economics and econometrics from the London School of Economics, United Kingdom. In addition, he holds an M.Phil in European studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University where he researched implications of EU environmental standards on Indian exports. Mr. Sugathan is a citizen of India.
